Under the heading "For the Earth", the third edition of the Biennial Méditerranéenne des Arts de Tunis was held this year.
The organizer of the biennial is the Tunisian section of the association ECUME - Echanges Culturels en Méditerranée. The society founded 1983 in Marseilles strives to foster cultural production in the Mediterranean region and develop lasting relationships between creators of art and institutions from cities connected by a common historical heritage. ECUME organizes the occasions and spaces for encounters, as well as the exchange on the basis of mutual respect and interests. The association maintains offices in Alexandria, Algiers, Beirut, Damascus, Genoa, Seville, Split, and Tunis.
Like with every biennial, for this year as well, artists from partner cities (see below) were invited to Tunis to take part in a weeklong work situation. The exhibition curated by Mongi Maatoug and shown at the Municipal Museum of Tunis, in the former Kheireddine Palace, was accompanied by music, educational offerings, and literary events.
Those participating in the 3rd Biennial in Tunis came from the following cities:
Tunisia: Bajah, Kairouan, Al Kaf, Nabul, Sidi Bouzid, Tawzar, Tunis.
Other Mediterranean-region locations: Alexandria, Algiers, Amman, Athens, Beirut, Casablanca, Damascus, Gaza, Genoa, Istanbul, Limassol, Ljubljana, Malta, Nicosia, Palermo, Sarajevo, Seville, Split, Tangiers, Tétouan, Tirana and Tripoli.
Special invitations were extended to artists from Baghdad, Byblos, Cologne, Lisbon and Rome.
